A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM
RI?ACI1, FLORIDA, 1N SUPPORT OF DECISION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY TO RESTORF, THE HISTORIC 19161'AI,M
BRACH COUNTY COURTHOUSE; AND, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVF, DATE.
WI IIiREAS, Palm Beach County has been losing important historic structures at an alarming rate; and
WI11?REAS, the historic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse is the key central structure representing
the entire County's history and the numerous people and events that have shaped our area; and
WI IERI?AS, the historic 9] 6 Palm Beach County Courthouse has served the people of Palm Beach
Cormty for the past 86 years; and
WI1F,RiiAS, the conclusion of a "feasibility study" found that there is enough original material
remaining in order to make the effort a true restoration, and not a replication; and
WHI?R}?AS, the cost for restoring the historic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse would he
approximately $15-18 million ($1.9 million ofwhich is already held in reserve for this project, and
$500,000 of which will be funded by a grant from the Florida Department of State, Division of
I listoric Resources), far less than the cost of $125 million for the new courthouse built in 1990; and
WI II:RI?AS, the team of professionals assembled to restore the old courthouse have a proven record
of success in restoring historic structures in the region, such as the restoration of Whitehall to the
Plagler museum, the restoration of Old School Square in Delray Beach, and the recent restoration
of the first United Methodist Church into the Harriet Himmel Gilman Theater; and
W}II?REAS, the restoration of the historic 19]6 Palm Beach County Courthouse will be the cultural
focal point of our county, create an oasis in the middle of our downtown, enhance surrounding
• property values, create a public gathering space, and enrich the spirit of our community.
• BI? 1T RIiSOLVI:D BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Village Council of the Village of North Palm Beach, Florida, does hereby support
the decisiar of the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County to restore the historic
1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse.
Section 2. The Village Clerk of the Village of North Palm Beach is hereby authorized and directed
to furnish a copy of this Resolution to the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County
and such other persons and governmental entities as the Mayor may direct.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
