2000-042 Supports Good Sam/St. Mary's Hospitals Staying OpenRESOLUTION 42-2000 • A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, STATING THE VILLAGE'S CONCERN AND SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN THE OPERATION OF BOTH GOOD SAMARITAN AND ST. MARY'S MEDICAL CENTERS BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: WHEREAS, Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center have been providing healthcare services to the citizens and visitors of our communities for over 50 years; and WHEREAS, Good Samaritan and St. Mary's Medical Centers have been the providers of quality medical care to all members of our community regardless of race, national origin, or financial status; and WHEREAS, Good Samaritan and St. Mary's Medical Centers are major employers of our community and major contributors to its economic health; and WHEREAS, the citizens and visitors of our community rely on the highly specialized services such as Trauma Care, Pediatric Emergency Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, High Risk Obstetrical Care, and Stroke Care delivered by St. Mary's Medical Center; and the general medical surgical care delivered by Good Samaritan Medical Center. WHEREAS, St. Mary's continues to be a very busy hospital providing a large volume of inpatient and outpatient care, and WIIEREAS, contributing factors to the reported financial crisis appeaz to be related more to management decisions made and those not made, than to the actual operations and market demand, and WIIEREAS, demographic projections indicate, over the next 10 or 15 years, a significant increase in the populations who consume and require the kinds of healthcare services provided by Good Samaritan and St. Mary's. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, Section 1. The Village Council of the Village of North Palm Beach, Florida, does hereby state its strong concern over the potential negative healthcare impact on our community should St. Mary's Medical Center be closed. Section 2. The Village Council of the Village of North Palm Beach strongly encourages the leadership of our broad communities, at every level, to do what is necessary to keep both St. Mary's and • Good Samaritan open to continue their long-standing mission of providing vital health and welfare services to the citizenry and visitors. Section 3. The Village Council urges that any and all Boazds involved with the governance of • Good Samaritan Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital take no action whatsoever to close either hospital until the Attorney General's Office of the State of Florida has concluded its investigation into the appropriateness and legality of closing either hospital.
