Former Village of North Palm Beach
Mayor Jerry Gardner died at his home in Old
Port Cove Saturday at age 72.
The retired president of AAV Companies, a
Cleveland -based national food service and
vending company, Gardner moved to North
Palm Beach in 1985, and shortly thereafter
became active in village and county politics
and other activities.
He was first elected to the Village Council
in 1988, became Vice -Mayor in 1989 and was
re-elected to that post in 1990. He became
Mayor in 1991, and served in that position until
March of 1992.
Prior to being elected to the council he had
served as president of the Harbor Village
Condominium Association and the Old Port
Cove Property Owners Association. He was the
founder of the North Palm Beach Community
Action Association, a political action
committee from which he resigned when first
elected to the Village Council.
He also served on the Palm Beach County
Beaches and Shores Council and on the North
Palm Beach Library Advisory Board.
At the time of his death Gardner was
serving as Chairman of the Twin City Mall
Task Force.
"All of us who are retired have the
opportunity, and we owe it to ourselves, to give
something back to (our communities)," he once
said in an interview with the Palm Beach Post.
"At this point in our lives there's no ambition
involved -- we just have to do it because we
want to," he added.
Commenting on Gardner's demise, North
Palm Beach Mayor V.A. Marks said,"We have
lost a good friend. He was a staunch supporter
of the village both during his tenure as a
member of the Council and afterward. Were
going to miss him."
North Palm Councilwoman Judy Pierman
:said of Gardner, "He activated Old Port Cove
And inspired its residents to become a part of
the larger North Palm Beach Community and
to take part in its activities. Those residents
now contribute much to the community, and
Jerry was the catalyst for all that.. He was also
a good friend, and he proved that one person
can make a difference," she added.
Nancy Moore, Library Director at the North
Palm Beach Public Library, said "Jerry was a
