February 22 marks the last day of Ray Howland as village
manager of North Palm Beach. Mr. Howland will be retiring
from the post he has held for the past 10 years.
Mr. Howland said he has enjoyed his. years of service to the
village, including working with the different members of
council. He says, "I have gone through a lot of effort to
strengthen the internal system. In the process I have worked
with some excellent employees and quality council members."
Mr. Howland has worked hard to maintain the quality of life in
North Palm Beach, as he really cares about its citizens.
But not only did Mr. Howland serve the village in an
outstanding way, he also got very involved in community
service. He coached a girls' softball team for 8 years and got
involved with various civic organizations. A sports enthusiast
himself, Mr. Howland hopes to do some coaching after he
retires.
Some of his other plans include taking an extended vacation.
"I think we'll take a vacation, maybe do some skiing out west,"
he says.
The village councilmen have fond memories of Mr. Howland's
service. Councilman Jerry Gardner recalls, "When I decided to
run for office, he was most helpful in guiding me with
ordinances and, other items a newcomer to the council might
find complicated." Gardner adds, "Ray Howland was not only an
outstanding village manager, he was a good member of the
community, 7 anging from baseball to the chamber of commerce.
The village this year is going to be hard -put to do without the
services of our great village manager and clerk." Village clerk
Dolores Walker will also be leaving the village.
®thcr council members will also miss Mr. Howland. Dr.
Marks saiO, "The' village of North Palm Beach is losing a great
man who has done :a wonderful job for the past 10 years. I'm
personally very sad to see him go... he'll be missed."
Tom Valente adds, "I will personally miss him very much.
He has done an excellent job as village manager and in
community service as well."
Judy Pierman, who said Ray Howland was a very special
manager, comments, "North Palm Beach is the greatest place to
live under the sun and it's because of people like Ray Howland
who have continually made it so. Ray has guided the village
and carried out the wishes of its people and his council
throughout his 10-year stay. His caring, integrity, and sense of
pride in the village has been evidenced throughout his tenure.
He will be missed but we thank him for all he's brought to the
village and we wish him well in the next chapter of his .life."
And Mayor Craig Mundt said, "He's done a wonderful job for
the village of North Palm Beach. We're fortunate to have had a
village manager of that caliber. It's a tough job to keep all
those 5 people happy. I've enjoyed working with Ray... he's
very responsive to the needs of the community, and well
prepared. He's also gone above and beyond the call of duty by
being very active in civic organizations, softball leagues."
Mr. Howland's successor will be Dennis Kelly, a consultant
and former town manager from Deland, FL. He will take over
the position on March 15.
Best wishes, Ray.
