When Charles "Charley" R. ®'Mellia
first began working for the Village of North
Palm Beach, he intended to stay only six or
seven months.
"I knew the Village manager who was
here at that time, he said. "He said he
needed some help in the Public Works
Department."
O'Meilia, 70, became the Village's Public
Works director in 1968. For his first assign-
ment, he set up what is now the Public
Services Department by combining the func-
tions of the then public works, planning,
building and zoning departments.
He then became the Public Services
director. O'Meilia also works as the Village's
chief code enforcement officer.
Last month, he was recognized by the
Village Council for 25 years of service.
O'Meilia received a plaque at a Nov. 9
council meeting and a resolution naming
Nov. 19 "Charley O'Meilia Day."
"I was totally unaware that they were
going to do something like that," O'Meilia
said. "It's a very nice way to recognize you."
O'Meilia said he spent part of Nov. 19 at
the North Palm Beach Country Club, where
an appreciation party was held in his honor.
He has bachelor's degrees in chemistry
and chemical engineering from Oklahoma
A&M and lives in North Palm Beach with his
wife, Mary. They have five children Tim,
Charles, Frank, Marianne and Christine, all
grown.
A retired Naval Reserve captain and
World War II veteran, O'Meilia said he has
remained in North Palm Beach because he
still loves it and it's a perfect community.
"You can always find lots of things to do
in a town like this," he said. "There's always
lots of challenges." y
