First Annual Village Heritage Day

Mark Hodgkins addressed council
members during last Thursday's
North Palin Beach Council meeting,
giving them the latest update on the
Village's first Annual Heritage Day
Festival and Parade, scheduled for
Saturday, May 13.
Events and activities planned for the
day include golf, tennis and pool
activities at the North Palm Beach
Country Club; a fishing derby, kayak
races, carnival games, a volleyball
tournament, food and entertainment.
The parade is set to start at 3 pm at
Village Hall, with the one -mile route to
follow US Highway One north to the
NPBCC.
Hodgkins said his department is
encouraging residents to volunteer to
help with the planning and organizing
the parade and festival, as well as
legitimate groups wishing to march in
the parade or enter a float. 'There is no
entry fee for the parade, which will
include a "best decorated bike" contest
for children ages 5-12, who will ride
their entries the entire route.

must be able to ride one anile and
control their bikes.)
In other action, the council:
® Approved, 4-1, second reading and
enactment of an ordinance allowing
changeable copy signs in P -Public
District, for the new North Palm Beach
Country Club sign. (Councilman
Charles O'Meilia voted against this
action, claiming it was unfair to other
businesses.)
® Unanimously approved first
reading of an ordinance amending the
General Employees Pension Plan by
providing for a cost of living allowance
(COLA) for pension benefits with a
mandatory contribution of two percent
of the employees salary for such
benefit.
• Unanimously adopted a resolution
appointing members to various Village
Boards.
S Adopted, 4-0, a resolution
opposing the extension of the current
moratorium on taxing sales via the
Internet, mail order, and phone by state
and local governments, pending the
successful implementation of sales tax
simplification.
• Approved the location of the new
monument sign for the North Palm
Beach Country Club (which will
basically be erected where the old one
currently stands).
• Approved, 3-2, the application to
rezone 9267-9271 Prosperity Farms
Road (Lot 30) from R1 Single Family
Residential District to CC Transitional
Commercial District, presently
occupied by Village Grocery and
Village Lawnmower Shop.
(Councilmen O'Meilia and Don Noel
voted against this action.)
i Unanimously approved a budget
transfer in the amount of $15,000 from
Council Contingency to Public Events
for a donation to the North Palm Beach
Elementary School for the purchase of
playground equipment (Playscape).
Approved, 5-0, a motion to
approve a budget transfer request in the
amount of $6,350 from the Capital
Project Fund to the R&M -PA &
Communications account for the
purpose of installing the Public Safety
Department's radio repeaters and
antenna to LodeStar tower in Lake
Park.
