Thou his About Babe -0"
9►
BY MICHAEL G/ERSHER
If somebody ever invents a way to talk to babies,
I know the babies would be the most against i.t. Their
best weapon is the fact that since you don't always know
what they want, you will offer everything. When our
own 6 -month-old babe -o goes into a tirade he always
gets what he really wants, and if he didn't really want
it, he cries himself to sleep. Many of us grown-ups never
know what we really want. We waste our whole lives
searching for the wrong thing while the babe -o would
just cry himself to sleep.
It's safe to say that every young parent worries
about spoiling a baby. Dr. Spock tells us not to answer
to his every whim. So when babe -o cries I ignore him
but my wife thinks I am heartless. She says there is al-
ways a reason that he cries. On my wife's suggestion,
I take babe -o for a walk. But I know it is the babe -o who is
taking me for a ride.
When the babe -o learns how to talk, he knows he'll
be done for, because he'll have to come up with reasons
for his demands. I will then treat him as an equal, and
it will work out very nicely. I only hope he treats me
as an equal; because, you see, the babe -o is nobody's
fool. According to Darwin's principles of natural selec-
tion, he is a combination of the best qualities of his par-
ents. He is an improved version of us. A late model.
In fact, maybe he's even a genius, or is my parental pride
sticking out?
v
The main thing I'm looking forward to when he
learns to talk is the honesty which children are universal-
ly known to express. The honesty which is so lacking in
grown-ups is always a child's finest quality. Most of us
lose it as we grow and harden. My fondest ambition for
him is that he retain that honesty.
