Travel back in time to 1956 and you'll find a very different North
Palm Beach. Only a few of the municipal services were available at the
time. They had a utilities manager, a Village Hall, and a fire/police chief.
Developed land included Anchorage Park Marina and ramp, 75 miles of
sewer pipes and 20 dredged canals. Now with the growth of community,
the development of the waterways, a multitude of recreational
opportunities, and a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course this small village
has come a long way.
We spoke with leaders and residents who've helped develop the
community. over the last 50 years and one theme remains constant, even
with its growth NPB has not lost its cozy hometown feel. "1'm
dedicated to the proposition that we are going to continue the ambiance
of our small town characteristics so our citizens can feel that they are isi
their home town no matter where they came from," says Dr. Edward M.
Eissey, Vice Mayor.
Since the pilgrimage of the first settlers, generations of families have
grown up here and had their children and grandchildren here. In 1973
The University of N.C. recognized NPB to be "one of the few well
planned communities of its size in the U.S.A." They accredit this to rigid
zoning and restrictions that have allowed NPB to grow but also prohibit
urban sprawl. Commercial buildings over four stories tall and strip malls
on land other than Northlake Blvd. and US Hwy One remain prohibited.
"We keep business out of the residential areas so the citizens can enjoy
the serenity of The Village of North bPalm Beach," says Dr. Eissey.
In the beginning between 1924 and 1955 before NPB was
incorporated, Lake Park (then Silver Beach) and NPB were adjoining
communities. In 1955 NPB consisted of seven square miles of sugar sand
and scrub palmetto and fewer than 100 individuals living between Lake
Park and Jupiter. The land originally owned by the MacArthur
Foundation was sold to Herbert and Richard Ross for a mere $5 million
dollars and became incorporated in 1956.
Now some of the recent accomplishments in the last 50 years include;
a new public library, public safety buildings and community centers, the
revamping of the Twin City Mall, beautification projects on Northlake,
USI and Prosperity, an updated recycling and storm program, annexation
of western areas, annual holiday events, boat parades and festivals and
currently the construction of a Signature Jack Nicklaus Golf Course.
One of the most successful festivals that has come out of North Palm
Beach is the Heritage Festival. "Heritage Festival started small and has
morphed into this very large and respected event. We started with small
bounce houses and now we have carnival rides, parades containing over
50 units, live bands, arts and craft with about 115 vendors, and recently
the festival brought in over a hundred people for our latest competition
the `fun run'," said Nancy Hensler, Recreation Program Coordinator.
The 50"' Anniversary of The Village of North Palm Beach was a large
undertaking. The project was started over two years ago and has been
headed up by Dianna Craven, Chair, Mark Hodgkins, Vice Chair and Dr.
Edward M. Eissey, Honorary Chair. "We started almost two years ago
and have worked with so many wonderful people throughout the village,"
says Craven.
August 11 NPB will be hosting a birthday party to celebrate its 50`h
Anniversary. "We are having a pool party, DJ, food provided by Eddie
D's (lobster tail, burgers, birthday cake) at the North Palm Beach
Country`Club from 6-10 p.m. The event is family oriented, community
wide and at our last pool party in July we had about 150 people, it will be
a great time," says Bill Egan, Recreations Department.
The reburial of the Time Capsule for the next 25 years is happening at
10:00 a.m. Saturday August 12 at The North Palm Beach Library. "Pratt
& Whitney donated the capsule 25 years ago and it will now be reburied.
The items we've collected to be placed in the capsule are a Signature
Golf Ball, a Jack Nicklaus autographed map of the new course, pictures
of the present council, a variety of periodicals, a few cell phones, photos
from 1956 and letters from residents," says Craven.
North Palm Beach seems to understand the sense of `building a
community'. A community that has prospered without too much change,
a community with generations of family that have taken root, a
community that still honors the past for progress in the future and lastly a
community that engages its residents to take part.

North Palm Beach today
THESE AERIALS SHOW THE GROWTH of this small community since 1956. A community once
desolate is now booming with growth and has a population is 12,528. NPB has a total area of 5.08 square
miles and was originally a plethora of mangroves, swamps and farmland. In the beginning on August 13,
1956 a master plan was drawn by Seward Mott Associates of Washington D.C. and the Village of NPB was
incorporated by Tallahassee. Full-scale development occurred with extensive dredging creating waterfront
cul-de-sacs and a new east -west artery connecting Lighthouse Drive, Old Dixie Hwy and U.S. Hwy One. In
1957 Pantry Pride was the first business to receive a certificate of occupancy and The Twin City mall
arrived in 1971 as Palm Beach County's second enclosed shopping mall. NPB now reaches its 50"' year and
the Village still looks new on account of the recent renovations and beautification projects. NPB residents
should take comfort in the fact that while the Village is still growing it will not turn into a congested urban
environment that encroaches on residential areas.
