In 1956, John and Richard Ross bought the land for North
Palm Beach from John D. MacArthur. What is now, the
Country Club with a club house and golf course was
included in the purchase. A master plan, Florida's first
planned community was drawn up. The charter was given
to the Village August 13, 1956. Before the first residence
was built, the Village had many paved streets, sidewalks, a
Village Hall, a functioning sewage disposal plant, water,
electric, gas and telephone lines. Dredging operation
running north and south split the village in halves. The
east -west branches were all bulk -headed.
Sales of home -sites began October 1956 with a parade of
homes. The Ross brothers also created the North Palm
Beach Marina, located on the Inter -coastal waterway and
donated 10 acres of land to the Palm Beach County Board
of Education for an elementary School. North Palm Beach
has a council form of government and had a Council and
Department of Public Safety in 1956. Charles
Cunningham, Richard Ross, Jay White, John Schwen'cke
and J. D. MacArthur formed the first village council.
