Twelve -year-old Andy Larson yes-
terday became the region's top spell-
er for the third consecutive year
when he out -spelled 12 other students
in 27 rounds at the 16th Regional
Spelling Bee.
Andy's win means he again will
represent Palm Beach, Glades,
Hendry and Okeechobee counties at
the National Spelling Bee in Wash-
ington, D.C., May 26-30. Last year, he
placed 11th out of 168 contestants in
the national bee. The year before, he
ranked 65th.
At yesterday's competition, spon-
sored by the West Palm Beach Kiwa-
nis Club and The Evening ?Mmes, the
seventh -grader from The Benjamin
School in North Palm Beach spelled
28 words correctly, including privi-
lege, writhe, medallionist, stalag-
mite, opulent, poltergeist, ninnyish,
heliography, f lexuosity, whimsical-
ity, udometer, arviculture, potpourri,
ionosphere, taupe, tracheotomy, per-
vicacious, scintiscan, zymology, rem-
iniscence, dextrally, mealy-mouthed,
supercentrif uge and warrantee. But
he almost tripped up on "xerogra-
phA 9' which he mispronounced sever-
al times.
"I hated to make him keep repeat-
ing the word, blit I wanted to be
certain he knew what he was being
asked to spell," said Terri Whitten, a
speech pathologist from Forest Hill
Elementary School who pronounced,
defined and . used each word in a sen-
tence for the spellers.
Andy's stiffest competition came
from Emmanuel Kavekos, a St. Juli-
ana's Catholic School eighth -grader
who finished second in the competi-
