Ire 1987, an articlein the Palm Beach Post predicted that Lake
Park was becorxing a senior citizens retirement village. This
theory was, of course, unpopular with the inhabitants. People
living there loved its homey atmosphere and neighborliness.
However, there was some basis for the prediction. Just a few
years before, gn 1971, The Twin City Mall had opened, attract-
ing families to the area. By 1975, Lake Park had been 95 per-
cent developed, encompassing the same boundaries set by fir.
Kelsey in the '20s. Lake Park's population peak had been at-
tained M" 1979.
Some of the reasons for the decline, the article stated, was
the lack of quality in the district schools, and tine fact that the
Twin City Mall vas losing most of 'its leaseholders. The above
changes over a comparative short time were typical, for Lake
Park's history reveals a seesaw existence with extenuatm*g cir-
cumstances affecting its progress.
The history of the town of Lake Park can be divided into four
periods : the Kelsey period., the Depression, World War 1I and
subsequent development, and the present period.
It was in the 1920s that Lake Park was developed and reached
one of the tops of its seesaw.
The Florida east coast had. its Henry Flagler, a builder of
railroads, towns and resort hotels. The west coast had its Henry
Plant, a railroad pioneer and builder of the Tampa Bay Hotel.
Lake Park, otherwise known as Kelsey City, the name given
to it in its beginning, had its Harry Kelsey, the visionary of
whom only good things were said.
"God made Harry Kelsey with the brain ol'Napoleon and the
soul of honor," someone said of hires. Charles Branch, general
manager of Kelsey East Coast Finance Company, said Kelsey
trusted people too much. His secretary, Elizabeth Pearson, told
stories praising his honesty. Of Baptist faith, Kelsey was said
io be a very generous person and one who loved children. In
X115 immediate family there was his wife, and five children:
Paul, Ted (Earl ), Dorothy, Dick, and Bernice. No mention of
them has been found ire newspaper clippings, leading one to
believe Kelsey sought privacy M' his family life.
When Mr. Kelsey visited Palm Beach ta recuperate from a
bout with pneumonia in 1919, he was so impressed with the
possibilities for development in the nearby acreage, that within
two days he had bought what was later to become North Palm
Beach, Lake 'ark and Palm Beach Gardens, as well as some
1 4 miles of oceanfront between Miami and Jupiter.
From the onset, he envisioned a town which would be a resort
area and winter playground. He dreamed of a zoned city,
perfectly planned, perfectly executed. This was Harry Kelsey.
The 1920s were the years kraown as the "boom" in Florida,
to be followed by the "bust," occurring just ar,% few years before
the rest of the country suffered the Depression.
Twenty years before Harry Kelsey began to buggy land in
Florida, he had worked as head waiter at a Hartford, Con-
necticut, hotel for ten dollars a week. Next, tae was in the fast
lunch business. At the time of this story ire had been coresident
of Waldorf Systems for four years, a national chain of 112
restaurants, bakeries and commissaries, based in Boston,
Massachusetts. His secretary stated that he sold stock M* the
Waldorf Systems to invest in land. He was born 'in Claremont,
New Jersey, on March 26, 1879, lived on the family farm at
Springfield, Massachusetts, studied at Connecticut Literary In-
stitute, entered the real estate business, then, by 1919, had
turned his first restaurant in Springfield into a $4,500,000
business.
A 1919 article from the Palm Beach Post with an Arcadia
dateline states Kelsey as the owner of numerous acres from
West Palm Beach to Ft. Myers. die had plans to build a new
city with acreage reserved sufficient for his own stock, con -

Kelsey's plan was to build an 18 -hole golf course and a resort
community on Munyon Island to be called "Palm Harbour.,'
(The location of Big Munyon Island in Lake Worth corresponds
to just south of where North Anchorage Drive meets U.S. I to
South Anchorage Drive, and just west of MacArthur Park.) This
was known as Dr. James Munyon's Island. He had built a hotel
there in 1903 which burned betiond repair in 1917. Dr. Munyan
(title does not denote a medical degree), was the owner of Mun-
yon's Proprietary Medicines in Philadelphia. His health -
rejuvenating medicine sold for $1.9.9 a bottle and contained
papaya juice and sparkling water. He claimed that these ingre-
dients spouted continuously from a fountain—The Fountain of
Youth—on his island. The truth was that water was piped in
from the mainland. Hour-long boat trips to the 'Island were a
treat.
George Currie, the attorney of record for Dr. James Munyan,
in the preface to a book of poems he had written about the area,
wrote, "In presenting this poem the poet has used his poetic
license to the limit byactuallydescring a causeway io Nlun-
yon
Island which never did exist. It is, however, a part of the
plan laid out by Harry S. Kelsey, the wizard from Boston, who
is transforming a wilderness into a winter resort that is io out
Herod, Herod and make the great Palm Beach look like thirty
cents. > s
Dr. Munytan boasted of what the island would be when the
causeway was built by Harry Kelsey, and a 72 -story hotel
erectec"t on the island. No-ne of these plans ever came to fruition.
_ However, with Paris Singer, the twenty-fourth child of Singer,
founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Kelsey built
an 18 -hole golf course with clubhouse, called the Winter Club,
for $500,000. This was located north of Kelsey pity. Buses
brought tourists, in 1927, from Palm each hotels to play golf
there after U.S. 1 was constructed the previous year. This is
the present location of North Palm each Country Club. The
clubhouse was dedicated on March 26, 1927. The first two lot
owners to pay dues were Robert C. Baker and B.D. Cole (B.I3.
Cole Insurance Company).

Early Pioneer Families
Some of the families settled as pioneers in the area. In 1916,
Mr. R.E. McLaren, the owner of a vinegar factory in Edmon-
ton, Canada, moved tQ the area because of ill health. His land
extended frown the Intracoastal east to where U.S. 1 is today
along the road still bearing the McLaren name. He had bought
14 acres of land from Prosperity Investment Company made
up of a Captain Andrews, Captain E.N. Dimick, and one other
person, when he sent for leis wife and tee. children : W.E. tAlber-
ta),Willie,
Guy, Fleddie, Clara, Jim, Velma, Lulu, Edward, and
Bebe.
Mr. McLaren originally farmed, grew guavas, raised cows
and pigs without having much success. Then he opened a
grocery store at the Intracoastal. Mrs. Louise Maheu White ran
the toll chain, which ran across the canal about where the coun-
try club is today. It stopped boats at this point to collect fees
to help offset the cost of dredging the canal, so this was an ac-
tive spot and his store prospered. By 1926 a bridge had been built
at Monet -McLaren Roads. Mr. McLaren went into the construc-
tion business.
Mrs. McLaren won many prizes at the annual Prosperity
Farms Community Fair. One year her jams. and jellies not on-
ly won first prize at the county level, but went on tQ win awards
at the state, national and even international levels.
Another award winner in the family was Alberta, who while
in his twenties, won first prize for milking the most cows m* one
hour at Kelsey City Dairy.
When he was 84, Robert Edgar McLaren was honored by
receiving a plaque from the Juno Sportsman's Club iri January
1959. It read as follows : "Presented to Robert Edgar McLaren
as the oldest living resident and father of Juno, Florida." The
older Juno, farther north, became Juno Beach, when later
redeveloped.
The McLaren family home and adjacent homes owned ley the
McLarens, can still be seen today near the Royale Harbor
Waterway condominiums. the Frank Wilsons. They

settled in West Palm Beach, he was persuaded to come down
too. Once here, lie ran into an old friend who sold hires about 10
acres near Canal Street, on either side of the Florida East Coast
Canal.
To put a roof over his family while their first house was be-
ing built on Canal5treet, Mr. Wilson built a structure 16 by 16
feet and purchased a World War I army tent to use as a roof.
He built bunk beds of wood for the boys' use. Merchasen

The family was a large one of seven boys and one girl—Luiro,
Nferchasen, Thelma, Ellison, Carlos, Gernt, Kirk (Spencer), and
Lyman.
After the 1928 storm destroyed their home, the Wilsons rebuilt
on the other side of the Intracoastal where Ellison Wilson Road

lived there. until his death in his nineties. He was a painter in
Palm Beach for many years. Interested in exotic plants, he was
always looking for something different to try to grow. He was
also an avid reader.
Ellison Wilson Road was named for the brother who lost his
life whfle serving as a gunner on a tank in World War 11. Carlos,
who was in the Coast Guard, ie -Us of dreaming that Ellison came

Peter Maher was an inventor. When he developed a -tubeless
fire in his native Belgium in the early 1900s, his first thought
was to approach American automobile companies to market
his *invention. Bringing his two older sons, Frank and Tony, with
him, and leaving his wife and younger children in Belgium,
Peter came to America.
As luck would have it, just as Peter intended to approach the
American automobile companies, World War I broke out. The
companies converted to making war supplies and were not in-
terested lil a new type of tire. die never was able io sell his
invention.
At this time, Peter had not only lost out iri selling his tubeless
tire, he was stranded here until after the war, for no foreigner
was able io book passage tri cross the Atlantic. As there were
friends from Belgium in the'lades, he went there to try farm-
ing. There was much flooding during regular rains then for
although plans had been made, little land in the Everglades had
been drained, so successful crops defended. to a great degree
on the weather. Peter also tried Canada before coming to the
Prosperity Farms area to settle in 1920, having brought his wife
and family over after the war.
In the beginning, Peter had a dairy farm where North Palm
Beach Country Club is now, as well as his vegetable farms.
When that property was sold to the Kelsey holdings, Peter and
his sons helped build the Winter Club on that site.
The sons, Frank, John and Tony, all became farmers along
Prosperity Farms Road. The farms were called "bunch and
crate" vegetable farms for most of the produce was pre-ordered
by the grocery stores and hotels. At one time, more than 35
varieties were raised. Many first prizes were won at the state
fairs in Tampa. Varieties included onions, radishes, parsley,
collard greens, leeks, beets, cocktail cherry tomatoes, peppers,
eggplant, savoy, red and white cabbage, kohlrabi, turnip greens,
escarole, endive, Swiss chard and New Zealand spinach. (Palm
Beach Post, 1955.)
The Maheu-Vanbelliglaen partnership began in 1924 when
Peter Maheu and Arthur bought land together. They had 25 io
30 acres of vegetables and around 250 acres of pasture. The dairy

wepression Years
Lake Park became like a ghost town by 1930. The country's
Depression had arrived, coupled with losses from the "bust."
Those citizens left to hold together the town were few. However,
there was a great spirit of community fellowship during the
Depression. The Community Church on Park Avenue served as
a focal point of recreational activities, and people were tending
the needs of each other. They seemed to draw closer as they
had all suffered so many tragic events together.
--- The Tesdem Company, Inc., the organization of Sir Harry
Oakes of Ontario gold mine fame, ire 1939 bought 80 percent of
Lake Park including the old Winter Club and golf course—today
North Palm Beach's Country Club. The flamboyant Oakes,
made a baronet by King George ISI in 1939, used the Winter Club
for his home for part of the year. (That building was razed a
few years back.) A.t this time (1939), the name of the town was
changed from Kelsey City to Lake Park, with the stipulation
that the waterside park would always retain the name of Kelsey.
The Tesdem Company made some improvements and poured
12 million into the Lake Park area, building 14 houses and sell-
ing lots, combining the 25 -foot platted lots into 75 -foot lots. At
this time, it seemed that Lake 'ark was headed for another top
of the seesaw period. Certainly Harry Oakes may have had
plans to develop more of this area, but he was found brutally
murdered in his home in the Bahamas M' 1943. His widow could
not sell assets of Tesdem, according to her husband's will, un-
fil their son reached 21 years of age, so much beautiful land re-
mained undeveloped for many years.
World War iI took place in the early '40s. A fact not widely
known today is how vulnerable the East Coast of Florida was
during this war. Many evenings fires could be seen over the
ocean. One could only guess that either the enemy had bombed
our convoy, or that a German sub had been l it bar our men.
