Volunteers included: • Girl Scout Troop 20876 • Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 4999 • The Ladies Auxiliary • Father Andrew Doherty of the Knights of Columbus Assembly 0155 Thank you also to the many individuals and businesses who gave money. Your donations helped us purchase gift boxes ~alum (`` L1} ''4 filled with personal items and holiday decorations, and covered the postage costs to ship the packages. The Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 4999 and their event coordinator Carlos Ruth provided the hall, set up the room, made breakfast for the volunteers, and donated $2,000. Father Doherty and the Knights of Columbus Assembly 0155 provided assistance and donated $1,000. North Palm Beach Public Works employee Charles Mitchell loaded 49 large shipping boxes on a Village truck and delivered them to the post office for a timely delivery. The hard work and generosity of everyone involved means a lot to the troops who receive the packages, and it let's them know the people of North Palm Beach truly appreciate their sacrifice. n Support Our Troops ©z r' 4 JANUARY 2019 1 3 FIRE DEPARTMENT Fuel -powered devices can provide wonderful benefits to families when used properly. But they also underscore an important necessity in the home: the need for a carbon monoxide alarm. Carbon monoxide poisoning can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or cars left running in garages. At its worst, carbon monoxide can cause severe side effects or even death. Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms Make sure your home has a carbon monoxide alarm. If you don't have one, please go out and get one. As with smoke alarms, make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas, and keep them at least 15 feet away from fuel -burning appliances. You won't know that you have a carbon monoxide leak without a working alarm. So test alarms regularly and replace them every five to seven years depending on the manufacturer's label. • For the best protection, have carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. • Carbon monoxide alarms are not substitutes for smoke alarms, and vice versa. Combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are available. NiGI ITHAWK M+ www a o 4 1 VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM BEACH Understand How Carbon Monoxide Can Be Harmful • Don't use a grill, generator or camping stove inside your home, garage or near a window. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Don't leave a car, SUV or motorcycle engine running inside a garage, even if the doors are open. • Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home. • On the outside of your home, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris. • Carbon monoxide can accumulate in or around your motorboat, so install an alarm on your boat. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that you cannot see, otaste or smell. Each year, 184 children in the United States die due to carbon monoxide poisoning and more than 20,000 children visit the emergency room. For more information visit safekids.org. © 2015 Safe Kids Worldwide° FIRE DFPARTMFNT When should you call 911 for a medical emergency? One of the saddest laments that we hear in the emergency department is, "I should have called 911 sooner!" Well that only helps if you happen to have a time machine that can allow one to go back and do things differently! Time lost is tissue lost, heart muscle lost, gray matter lost, blood lost, life lost. So, when do you call 911? Too many people are reluctant to call 911 believing the symptoms are really minor and will go away on their own, or that the paramedics will judge the decision as being frivolous. And all too often those people fear of the expense of an emergent ambulance ride. Let's talk about when it is absolutely justified and essential that you call 911, and let's start from the top: Signs of a stroke: • Acute severe unprecedented headache • Unprecedented seizure • Lost or blurry vision • Facial droop • Slurred speech • Arm or leg weakness • Unsteady gait or loss of balance Signs of a heart attack: • Chest pain/pressure or shortness of breath unrelieved by rest • Acute cold sweat accompanied by nausea and/or weakness Gastrointestinal emergencies: • Uncontrolled vomiting especially with fever • Vomiting blood or bloody diarrhea Trauma: • Any fall that prevents unassisted ambulation • Any injury with gross bony deformity or uncontrolled bleeding • Head trauma with loss of consciousness or on blood thinners • Extensive burns or penetrating trauma Sepsis: • Fever greater than 100 with weakness nausea or vomiting or altered mental status Drug use/abuse: • Any suspected overdose of legal or illegal drugs! JANUARY 2019 1 5 NEW COLLECTION DAYS/Needle drop-off Bulk item and yard waste pickup days change January 1 In order to provide better collection of vegetative yard , waste, the Village Sanitation Division will begin picking up yard waste on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays COLLECTION SCHEDULE BEGINS starting in the new year. The days for pickup of bulk items will change to Tuesdays and Thursdays. I • Monday - Garbage & vegetation The changes take effect beginning January 1 st, but there • Tuesday - Bulk & recycling (multi -family) will be no collections that day because of the New Year's • Wednesday - Garbage & vegetation holiday. • Thursday - Bulk & recycling (single-family) The pickup days for residential household garbage and recycling are not changing. The new schedule simply swaps pickup days for yard vegetation and bulk items, such as old appliances and furniture. The main benefit of the new schedule is that residents will now receive vegetation pick-up three days a week instead of two. And since a lot of vegetation is put out on the weekend, it will be picked up a day sooner under the new plan. The changes also allow the Village Sanitation Division to work more efficiently, freeing up resources to provide better service. If you have any questions, contact the Public Works Department at (561) 691-3440. I • Friday - Garbage & Vegetation I Residents can safely drop off needles to prevent accidental pokes For the safety of the public and Village sanitation For safety reasons, staff will not assist with placing the items employees, residents can dispose of needles at the Public Works compound at 645 Prosperity Farms Road. There are two designated boxes there: A red plastic one to accept sharps directly, while the other, made of cardboard, can accept sharps containers. There is a saying, "Art speaks for itself." But the art of Rockwell and Wyeth spoke to the public and critics in entirely different ways. Hear how Rockwell painted the qualities one would like to see society return to and he did it with a sense of whimsy. e s h e's Wyeth was accused of being a hopelessly sentimental painter of rural scenes. But Fred Dixon will argue the critics never completely understood his work. The lecture will conclude with the firestorm over the Helga paintings and a look at "Christina's World."
