04 2016 NewsletterAPRIL 2016APRIL 2016 “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun” Village of North Palm BeachVillage of North Palm Beach NPB Library Dedication in 1969 A Message from the Village Manager AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM Dear Residents, We invite you to celebrate the Village’s 60th Anniversary by attending the Heritage Festival and Parade on Saturday, April 2 nd, at Anchorage Park! Staff has worked diligently to make this special event a meaningful and fun-filled occasion featuring a Business Expo, live bands, carnival rides and games, concession booths and so much more. Plus, the Heritage Parade is bigger and better this year, showcasing bands, civic groups, clubs and organizations from the surrounding community. PLEASE COME OUT AND ENJOY THIS SPECIAL DAY! As the Village “turns” 60 years old, this is a perfect opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are now and where we want to go. The Village Council needs and welcomes your input and involvement as they consider major issues, such as the new clubhouse facility, the Master Plan, boat and RV storage, etc. Many of you have exercised your civic duty by attending public meetings and Council workshops which provide insight into the thought processes that influence and shape Council decisions. I am hopeful that you will encourage your friends and neighbors to become more active so that they too can experience firsthand the benefits of engagement and of voicing their opinions on matters concerning where they live and work and play. You CAN make a difference! Also please note that tentative workshop topics for April include the Country Club, the capital budget and Village sanitation services. Please keep in mind that workshops are simply an opportunity for the council to examine various issues in-depth so that they may give guidance to staff regarding future action(s) to take, if necessary. There is no vote at a workshop. Check our website (www.village-npb.org) for actual dates and locations. I look forward to seeing you at our Heritage Festival and Parade! Sincerely, Jim Kelly AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be on-hand to help you prepare your tax return now through April 15th. WEEKDAYS Monday, Wednesday, Friday LOCATION NPB Council Chambers HOURS 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Taxpayers should bring their current tax forms, W -2’s, 1099’s and other tax information along with last year’s tax return and picture ID. For information, call the Village Clerk’s office at 841-3355. Her last day will be April 15th. Betty has worked for the Library for the past seven years, is a resident of North Palm Beach. Her hus- band, Paul, has served on the Waterways Board. Betty will surely be missed as she loved the library and making award winning-floats for the Heritage Day Parade. She was involved in many community and employee events. Her laughter and love of books was evident wherever she went. Betty, her husband and her pets will be moving to their cabin in the mountains of Georgia. Please stop by the Library to wish her well in her retirement! Last month, Village em- ployees celebrated Charles Mitchell’s thirty years of employment with the Village of North Palm Beach. Employees took up a collection and surprised him with a breakfast and a gift card. Charles works in the Public Works Depart- ment and said he is very thankful for working with such nice people. He has seen a lot of chang- es through the years but continues to enjoy com- ing to work every day. Congratulations Charles! Library Director Betty Sammis Retiring North Palm Beach Recognizes Thirty-Year Employee The Finance Department has been awarded the Distiguished Budget Presentation Award. CONGRATULATIONS! Pg. 4—Employee News 561-841-3380 Employee News The picture shows Chief Dudden, Director of Public Safety, accepting delivery of the Village’s first fire engine. The engine was built by the American - LaFrance Co. of Elmira, NY and, as was the standard of the day shipped by railcar to WPB where it was picked up (explaining the background). The other gentleman in the picture was the factory technician sent with the engine to provide training in use & maintenance to department personnel. The engine was state-of-the-art for small suburban fire departments of the day; built on a commercial chassis with a 750 gallon per minute (GPM) pump and 500 gallon water tank, two people rode in the cab and the rest of the crew rode, standing on the tailboard. In comparison, our engines today are built on a custom chassis with 1250 GPM pumps, still a 500 gallon tank, and everyone rides inside the protective cab. The North Palm Beach Police Department would like to remind resi- dents that when preparing to go out of town on vacation it is important that you take necessary steps to safeguard your homes and vehicles from potential bur- glars. If you will be out of town for an extended period of time, make sure that all vehicles are secured inside a closed garage when possible. Vehicles may be placed in a location to provide the appearance that you are home if the garage is unavailable. Remember to lock all windows and doors and remove all valuables. To safeguard your homes, make sure that any exterior lighting is operational overnight. All exterior doors and windows are must be closed and locked. If your home is equipped with an alarm system, check to make sure it is operating properly prior to setting it. Ask a friend or neighbor to look after your home while you are away and have them periodically check the property to make sure that everything is in order. You can provide specific dates to the post office to suspend mail delivery until your return. Burglars will often look to see a collection of mail and/or packages are at the front door and use that as an indicator that the resident is away and the house is an easy target for a burglary. The North Palm Beach Police Department strongly encourages residents to complete a Vacation House Watch form. This program is a free service to all village businesses and residents. The form can be accessed on our website and is also provided for your convenience in the lobby. NORTH PALM BEACH POLICE TIPS CODE OF THE MONTH—Sec. 15-15. - Maintenance requirements. (e) Pools and spas shall be maintained so the water remains free and clear of pollutants and de- bris. Pools and spas shall comply with the enclosure requirements of this Code and Florida Building Code, as amended from time to time. Studies report meditation reduces levels of adrena- line and cortisol and de- creases metabolism, breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure while increasing alpha (relaxing) brain waves. Brian waves become syn- chronized between hemi- spheres producing gains in memory and concentra- tion as deep relaxation occurs. Focused meditation can im- prove performance, promote healing, and relieve pain. Medita- tion can create balance, grounding, inner peace, and increased spirituality and sense of personal well-being. For children medi- tation can decrease hyperactivity, increase alertness and school performance. Learn how meditation can change your life!
