As you can see from our cover, this year we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of North Palm Beach. In my September newsletter I described factors that have made our first 60 years successful. One key fact that I failed to mention was that the original developers of the Village, Richard and Herbert Ross, created the vision/plans that made North Palm Beach “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun!” The Ross brothers wanted the Village to have its own elementary school, so they gave the Palm Beach County School Board the property on South Anchorage Drive for that purpose. They built and gave the Village the Village Hall on US 1 for maximum visibility and they insisted the library eventually be near the elementary school. The Ross brothers also provided a city water system, which was later replaced by Seacoast Utilities, for the new North Palm Beach. They planned the streets and finger-canals, so the Village could be a waterfront community, which today boasts more waterfront properties in it than many other residential communities in Florida. We will be sharing historical information in our newsletter and on our website (www.village-npb.org) during the year. If any of you have old photos, and/or stories about grow- ing up in North Palm Beach, please feel free to send them to Jcunningham@village-npb.org so we can share them with the rest of the community. Finally, please remember that the Village has scheduled a week long Charrette beginning on Saturday, January 30th, 2016 and ending on Friday, February 5, 2016 in the Village Council Chambers. In the Charrette process many ideas will be presented regarding both the Village Master Plan and the Country Club based on research, interviews, meetings and surveys. During the Charrette, these ideas will be refined through consensus, and ultimately presented to the Village Council. Sincerely, Jim Kelly P.S. The new clubhouse will be built on the existing clubhouse site. Volunteer Tax-Aide Counselors Needed for Northern Palm Beach County! Help people and give your mind a workout, too. If you’re out for the evening……. Turn on lights and a radio or television to give the appearance that some- one is home. Lock all doors and windows when you leave, even if it is just for a few minutes. Don’t display gifts where they can be seen from outside of the residence. Ask your neighbors to watch your property while you are away. If you’re shopping……. Remain alert of your surroundings and park in a well lit area. Lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card when possible. Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body and not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket. If you are shopping with children, teach them to stay close to you. If they are separated teach them to go to a store clerk, security guard or pre-determined person. As we prepare to ring in the New Year the North Palm Beach Police Department would like to remind you that your safety is our main priority. The well-being of all the citizens in the Village is paramount. Remember that Gunfire is Dangerous and Illegal. Do not fire a gun in celebration. Numerous people are injured or killed each year due to what has come to be known as “celebratory gunfire”. Help us to keep you, your family and your neighborhood safe by making good decisions when it comes to safety. The North Palm Beach Police Department takes reports of gunfire very seriously and officers will respond to these reports appropriately. While our intention is not to ruin the spirit of cele- bration, anyone engaged in the illegal discharge of a firearm within the Village will be arrested. Please help us in protecting our community. If you know of someone that engages in celebrato- ry gunfire, please call us ahead of time to report this information. If you hear or observe viola- tions, we urge you to report them immediately. You can report illegal gunfire and remain anony- mous. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy a safe environment during the holiday season in North Palm Beach. So what is sepsis anyway? Sepsis is an exaggerated systemic inflammatory response to an infection. The infection may start in the lungs , the urinary tract ,the abdo- men or even the skin. It used to be called an infection of the "blood stream", because very often the infection was so severe it would migrate into the blood. There are varying degrees of sepsis but mortality is so great that more than 80% of people in septic shock will die! The whole point of this article is to improve awareness and recognition of the symptoms, because early recognition can ward off disaster! The only treatment is early aggressive goal directed therapy with Copious intravenous fluid and rapid administration of intravenous antibiotics. But the most im- portant component is early recognition. Early signs of impending disaster are generalized weakness, fever, and a rapid pulse; sweating and a drop in blood pressure are the next ominous signs. As the process worsens the patient becomes confused, urine output decreases markedly, cold shivers ap- pear and rapid breathing ensues. It isn't just the infection alone but a drastic decrease in blood flow to critical organs impairing their function. Call your doctor early if any of these signs appear. If he is una- vailable go to your closest ER because hospitalization is usually necessary in advanced cases . If you are too weak to drive call 911. Fire rescue is on high alert this season for patients with sepsis. Pre- vention is always the best medicine so make sure you get your flu shot, your pneumonia vaccine, and the shingles vaccine. and please don't let your friends and loved ones tell you "it's just a little bug" when you can see objectively that they are sick. Friends help friends live longer and better by recog- nizing and reacting to early signs of impending sepsis.
