Ex-mayor to fill in on Village Council
By Bill DiPaolo Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Former Mayor Judy Pierman has been appointed as an interim council member and will serve until a new
council member is sworn in following a May 12 special election.
The special election is to replace Councilman Bill Manuel, a Village Council member who died Feb. 21 at home
from com plications of lung cancer. The Navy veteran had been a member of the council since 2006.
Pierman, a North Palm Beach resident, is deputy director of the Hispanic Human Resources Council on
Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach. She taught at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach for about 14
years.
Pierman could run for the council seat, but said she will not. Terms are two years.
“I’m doing this as a community service to help the village,” said Pierman, who was elected as the first woman
mayor in the village in 1989. She was elected to a second term and served until 1992.
The village is paying Pierman the monthly $750 salary paid to other members of the council. Her appointment
was approved by the other four members of the Village Council.
The winner of the May 12 special election will serve out the rest of Manuel’s term, which expires in March
2016.
This is the second time Pier-man has been appointed an interim council member.
She was appointed and served for about two months in 2006 to fill the seat held by Councilman Manny Grinn,
who also died during his term. bdipaolo@pbpost.com Twitter: @Billdipaolo
