De-Selection PolicyNorth Palm Beach Library De- Selection Policy
Withdrawal of materials from the collection, also called weeding, is an ongoing process
established by set guidelines and is essential for the maintenance of an active and useful
collection. The professional staff of the Library, under the direction and supervision of the
Library Director, will be solely responsible for the weeding of the collection.
• Criteria for de- selection.
• Misleading or inaccurate
• Outdated
• Duplicates
• Items with little or no circulations in the past 5 years (excluding classics)
• Ugly, worn, beyond repair
• Superseded by a newer edition or different work
• Trivial, or little merit
• Irrelevant to community needs
• Easily available elsewhere
• Space constraints
• Newspapers are retained for two month
• Magazines are retained for 8 issues
• Disposition of Withdrawn Materials
When library collection materials are no longer of a useful value as determined by the de-
selection criteria, materials may be disposed of as follows:
• Withdrawn materials in acceptable condition will be given to the Friends of the North
Palm Beach Public Library for sale.
• Recycling the materials.
• Processing the materials as solid waste
