AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be available to help
you prepare your tax return through April 14, 2014
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers.
Taxpayers should bring 2014 tax forms, W-2’s, 1099’s and
other tax information along with their 2013 tax return. Taxpayers are
also asked to bring proper ID. For information, call the Village Clerk’s office at
841-3355.
For decades the diving tower has been an icon of the Village. It has
represented a unique recreational amenity not often found in other
municipalities. But over time, diving towers have become a great
risk to the municipalities that had them and steadily they have been
removed from swimming complexes. In fact ours is the last munici-
pal tower in the entire Southeast region of America.
In the past year, there have been a couple of claims related to the
diving tower that have prompted our insurance carrier to withdraw
coverage for the structure. Further, our carrier made it very clear
that the tower could never again be used by the general public.
As a result, the Council was compelled to make a very difficult decision to tear down the facility.
Although we could make improvements to the tower to allow it to remain open for certified divers only,
the Council felt that the cost to allow such limited access would not be worth the nearly $500,000 it
would cost to remediate the facility. In addition, keeping the tower open under such a limited certifica-
tion program would still require the addition of a number of staff to continuously monitor activities at the
tower.
Council also considered removing the platforms and leaving the structure to retain the image of the tow-
er structure that many have grown so fond of over the years. However, it was concluded that without
the platforms, the remaining structure would not resemble the icon that has been a symbol of the com-
munity.
Based on the untenable risk to the Village, Council has directed that the tower be dismantled as soon
as possible. Plans are to place a contract immediately with a qualified demolition company and accom-
plish the project before the end of April.
Believe me when I tell you that Council and staff are as saddened by the prospect of losing this icon as
you are. But we, as a Village, cannot incur the risk associated with retaining it.
The Community Development
Department, which consists of
Planning, Zoning, Inspections
and Code Enforcement, has
outgrown its current space
within Village Hall. They will be
moving to a larger venue
located at 420 US Highway 1,
Suites 18-21 in mid-May.

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

The North Palm Beach Police Department would once again like to inform all
residents that distraction thefts are occurring in the local area. These crimes
are being committed by male and females in groups of two or more in which
the thieves pose as landscapers, plumbers, pest control and even city work-
ers to gain the trust of the targeted victim. Their mode of operation is typically
to take the victim to their backyard while the second and/or third person en-
ters into the residence. Once inside they search for jewelry, cash, silver cut-
lery, and other valuables.
These groups typically target elderly residents. The key to prevention is to
understand the method of operation and not to allow yourself to become dis-
tracted by thieves that attempt to lead you to your backyard. If you find your-
self in contact with individuals that match this description, do not let your
guard down and immediately contact the police department.
North Palm Beach Police Department urges all residents to confirm the identity of any and all workers
before allowing them onto your property or into your residence.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS – WE’VE GOT MAIL!
I am Lieutenant Colonel Eric Lopez and I command 2-2 Infantry Battalion from
Fort Knox, Kentucky. I am currently deployed with my battalion to Zabul
Province Afghanistan. Our primary mission is training, advising, and assisting
members of the Afghan Army and Afghan Police. As we near the final month
of our deployment, I took a moment to reflect on many of our achievements
over the past eight months. Our Afghan partners’ growth during our time with
them has been exceptional. Their increased capability to secure the province
reinforces the government’s efforts to govern but more importantly allows the
people to live without the oppressive fear caused inflicted by the Taliban. The
security forces are now a legitimate and credible institution ushering in a new
sense of normalcy for the Afghan population.
The North Palm Beach community served an instrumental role in our success.
Although I was not previously acquainted with North Palm Beach, through the
non-profit organization, America Supporting Americans (ASA), we were the
recipients of the cities generous kindness and overwhelming support for
between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Village of North Palm Beach sent
several care packages that helped raise our morale to the clouds. We
enjoyed the contents of each package and had a great time disseminating the
boxes throughout our base. The care packages replaced the gloomy season
with holiday cheer, but we were even more appreciative for the outpouring of
support from your community to ours.
I have the distinct honor of leading some of America’s brightest and bravest.
Every day I am humbled by young men and women willing to sacrifice
comfort, security, and sometimes their lives for our great nation. The care
packages you sent also humbled me. I am grateful to serve a nation that
rallies around her warriors and supports the efforts of those willing to sacrifice.
Some have noted a gap is growing between the American people and the
military. My experiences and your kindness demonstrate the exact opposite.
The “civil-military gap” is actually a strong bond that will continue to grow
stronger because of ASA and communities like North Palm Beach. Thank
you.
Lieutenant Colonel Eric Lopez is the commander of 2-2 Infantry Battalion from Fort
Knox, Kentucky. The battalion is on the eighth month of a nine-month deployment.
Lieutenant Colonel Lopez is originally from Connecticut and after graduating from
West Point served in a variety of assignments and units, including seven deployments
to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
