02-2013 NewsletterFEBRUARY 2013FEBRUARY 2013 “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun” “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun” The Village Of NORTH PALM BEACH The Village Of NORTH PALM BEACH Pg. 2—Village Manager / Clerk Village Manager / Clerk A Message from the Village Manager The Village of North Palm Beach and Support Our Troops USA Inc. send a huge THANK YOU to all the awesome folks who contributed to our fall and holiday shipments. Whether you donated items for the care packages, made a monetary contribution, or gave your time and effort to solicit donations, write cards, decorate boxes, and/or worked on packing day – you made a positive difference in the lives of our soldiers! This year’s holi- day shipments totaled two and one-half tons to 1240 troops. Amazing. Thanks to everyone for all your support throughout the year! We’ve got mail! Troops stationed in Afghanistan sent two postcards thanking NPB residents, saying “it is a big morale boost to see a patriot- ic community band together to support U.S. troops. The care package was much appreciated and enjoyed. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You and God Bless.” HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION REMINDER Every person who has legal title on January 1st to a residential property and lives there permanently qualifies for Homestead Exemption, and may qualify for additional exemptions as well. I have spent most of my professional career in high risk work environments involving the use of nuclear and hazardous materials, and around high risk endeavors such as oil and gas drilling. What I have learned from these experiences is that all accidents are preventable and it is incumbent on the leadership of an organization and its community to ensure that procedures and controls are in place to prevent accidents. As I have worked on safety issues in organizations, I have also begun to realize that safety and organiza- tional efficiency are linked. Normally, if you have an organization that is vigilant about safety, it is also well organized and well run. As a result, I place a high priority on safety as it relates to Village employees and residents. I have seen the devastation to an organization and to a family that comes from the loss of a loved one due to a work place accident and I never want to see that occur in our Village. Over the next few months, we will be systematically reviewing the safety of every one of our facilities and will also begin the task of looking at our work processes as well. Through these reviews and associated improvements, we hope to further the concept of North Palm Beach as the “Best place to live under the sun.” 561-841-3380 Village Clerk—Pg. 3 Village Clerk Elecciones de Village de North Palm Beach Las Elecciones Municipales son por grupo, generales e inde- pendientes (sin distrito ni afiliación a un partido) Fecha de Elección Municipal de 2013: martes, 12 de marzo de 2013 Los centros de votación abren de 7:00 am a 7:00 pm Escaños del Consejo de Village Abiertos para Elección Grupo 2 (ocupado actualmente por Doug Bush) Grupo 4 (ocupado actualmente por David B. What could be more heroic than saving a life? What could be more frustrating than being there when a life needed saving, and you didn't know what to do? 4 years ago a 48 year old man was playing racquetball in North Palm Beach. Suddenly he clutched his chest an collapsed. His opponent shouted to those nearby "Call 911" and then started compressions on his playing partners chest. North Palm Fire Rescue Medics arrived in less than 5 minutes and found the man's heart to be in ventricular fibrillation, the terminal arrhythmia that kills people in a heart attack. Medics shocked him once, then twice, and his heart started beating. By the time the man reached Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, he was awake and talking. A quick trip to the cath lab and the damaged artery that caused the heart attack was repaired. A young man who was technically dead for over five minutes, walked out of the hospital two days later. What saved his life? Not doctors or nurses or even paramedics... CPR, Cardio-Pulmonary-Resuscitation by a non-medical friend, saved a man with a heart too young to die. You can be that hero, and the person that you save will statistically be someone you know: a husband, a parent, a co-worker, or a friend. Come and learn how, for FREE, at the North Palm Fire Rescue Station on FEBRUARY 9th, 2013. Thirty (30) minute classes will run all day long. Be a hero. Save a Life! Learn CPR. The NPB Police Department joined force with NPB Fire/Rescue to participate in this year’s Holiday Hope Drive at the Quantum House. The Quantum House is a home for families with children that have severe medical conditions that are seeking treatment in Palm Beach County. This project involved a group of Law Enforcement Officers and Fire/Rescue Personnel that volunteered their time and effort to spread cheer to these families that were away from home and seeking medical treatments during the holidays. We would like to thank several local businesses in the Village for their partnership and participation in this effort. If you are interested in learning more information about the Quantum House or organizing a group of volunteers to participate in their Chef for a Day program visit their website at http://www.quantumhouse.org/.
