09-2012 NewsletterNORTH PALM BEACHNORTH PALM BEACH SEPTEMBER 2012SEPTEMBER 2012 “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun” “The Best Place to Live Under the Sun” The Village Of The Village Of Pg. 2—Village Manager / Historian Village Manager / Historian A Message from the Village Manager I want to offer a special thanks to Martha Andres and Kevin Spina for their help in finding a home for my wife and I in North Palm Beach and for making the relocation process as smooth as possible. Linda and I are very happy with our new home and are looking forward to having family members and friends visit us on a regular basis. Over the past month, I have spent a great deal of time with the village leader- ship team and employees. I can tell you that I am very impressed with their professionalism and with their dedication to this community. As citizens, you can be very proud of the organization that serves you and of the council that oversees the operation of the village. What impresses me most is the spirit of cooperation within the council and the “can do” attitude of our employees. Everyone is pulling together for the good of the community. Staff is open to new ideas and new concepts and they are eager to take on new tasks and challenges. I am also very impressed with the Village of North Palm Beach. As residents, we can be very proud of the place where we live. The neighborhoods are clean, safe, well kept, and extremely attractive. It shows that we have a community that takes pride in where we live and wants to keep it that way. I am also amazed at the amenities that are available to families in our community. The country club is clearly the epicenter of activity for North Palm Beach with a beautiful golf facility, tennis complex, and pool. We also have great parks, recreation centers and a first class library that create recreation opportunities for all residents. I had an opportunity to ride with Shane Mise, in our po- lice patrol boat a few weekends ago. As I was riding around the neighborhoods and through the various waterways, it became very apparent that you see North Palm Beach from a completely different perspective on the water. The waterways of this community are a vital part of the lifestyle of residents and they are resources to be treasured and protected. My first weeks here been consumed with review, evaluation, and modification of the 2012/2013 budget. As a com- munity, we are in the enviable state of having a good financial situation and excellent fund balances to support our operations. As you know, there are many communities that don’t enjoy the luxury of financial stability. We want to keep it that way, but we also want to make sure that we don’t “cut into the bone” of our operations. I have looked at every line of budget for 2012/2013, and I can assure you there is not fat in it. You have a council and staff that are dedicated to stretching every dollar as far as they can. For 2012/2013, we will be working to obviate the need for any additional fiscal impact to residents. We are also proposing to use monies collected specifically for capital im- provements, to acquire all of our priority one and two capital requests that have been building over the past few years. Our capital improvement fund monies plus funds from developer fees, will allow us to accomplish approxi- mately $800,000 in necessary capital improvements without triggering an increase in property taxes. I want all of you to know that I am proud to be a part of this organization and this community. I also want you to know that I am fully invested in preserving and protecting every aspect of the rich life- style that is North Palm Beach. I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible over the next few months. Thank you for your continued support of the council and staff. Public Safety / Library F ire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you've heard some version of this story your- self; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O'Leary, for more than 130 years. North Palm Beach Fire Rescue will be holding their annual Safety Fair on Saturday, October 13, 2012. This is in honor of Fire Prevention Week. Please stop by the North Palm Beach fire station between the hours of 11am to 2 pm and watch the many demonstrations that will take place. Plus there will be information booths and prizes for all there to win. The North Palm Beach Fire Rescue station is located at 560 US Hwy 1, North Palm Beach FL. UPCOMING LIBRARY ACTIVITIES BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY E very day children use the streets and roadways to get to and from school. NPB Police Depart- ment would like to remind all Village residents about the importance of providing children with the knowledge necessary to get them to and from school safely. • ALWAYS take a friend when walking or riding a bicycle and travel in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts. • ALWAYS provide supervision for young children if the route to school is isolated. • ALWAYS stay with a group while waiting at the bus stop. • If an adult approaches and asks for help remember adults should ask other adults not children for help. • Visit the bus stop with your children and learn the bus number. • Children should never accept a ride from anyone unless a parent has told them it is ok to do so in each instance. • If anyone follows your child on foot, tell them to get away from them as quickly as possible. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction, and try to quickly get to a spot where a trusted adult may help them. Advise them to tell a parent or trusted adult what happened. • If anyone tries to take them somewhere they should yell “This person is trying to take me away” and/or “This person is not my mother/father.” If anyone tries to grab them, teach them to make a scene and every effort to kick, scream and resist. • Walk the route to and from school with your children and point out safe places to go. 561-841-3380 Pg. 4—Community News / Library Parks & Recreation Registration for Fall Activities Fall Activities and Classes include, but are not lim- ited to: Zumba, Ballroom and Belly dance, duplicate bridge, Jazzercise, Country Line Dance, SPD Fit- ness, Tai Chi, Special Needs Camp, Table Tennis, Yoga and more! Back to School with Parks & Recreation Parks & Recreation—Pg. 5 www.village-npb.org 561-841-3380 Pg. 6—Country Club Country Club This is the time of year when the grass grows very quickly. With this, the rough can become longer and thicker than you may be used to. There are a few things to keep in mind when play- ing from this longer grass both around the green and just off the fairway. Greenside • Play the ball just back of center in your stance. • Use your most lofted club. • Keep the majority of your weight on your lead foot. • The farther down the ball is sitting, the more swing you will need. Fairway • Play the ball just back of center in your stance. • Choke down 1 inch on your club. • Move a little closer to the ball. • Aggressively swing down on the ball. • Use enough loft - Try experimenting with different clubs from different lies and even try your hybrids. Keep these few keys in mind when playing from thick greenside and fairway rough and I know you will have great results. Please Join us for our Annual NPBCC Junior Open on Sunday, September 23rd!
