VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Above: The third Grade Class at St. Clare School toured the Village of North Palm Beach Village Hall and Public
Safety Department for a field trip in April. Mayor Aubrey, President Pro Tem Manuel, and Councilman Eissey
explained how city government works. Students also toured and learned about each department in Public Safety.
Left: Support Our Troops, U.S.A. Inc. volunteers, Guy DiGennaro and
Doris Bender carry NPB’s banner in the 13th Annual Heritage Parade.
Heritage Day’s banner is on its way to the troops along with our special
July 4th shipment, but we’ll have more banners at the Village’s Fourth of
July celebration on the Country Club grounds Wednesday, July 4th.
Stop by and color, sign, and write well wishes on a banner to be sent to
our service men and women. The children love to color and write notes,
and our soldiers love to receive these messages from home.

What is the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)?
The NFIP is a Federal program enabling property owners
in participating communities to purchase insurance
protection against losses from flooding. This insurance is
designed to provide an insurance alternative to disaster
assistance to meet the escalating costs of repairing
damage to buildings and their contents caused by floods.
Participation in the NFIP is based on an agreement
between local communities and the Federal Government
that states if a community will adopt and enforce a
floodplain management ordinance to reduce future flood
risks to new construction in Special Flood Hazard Areas,
the Federal Government will make flood insurance
available within the community as a financial protection
against flood losses. The Village of North Palm Beach
participates in the National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP), which makes federally backed flood
insurance available for all eligible buildings, whether they
are in a floodplain or not.
What Flood Zone is my property in?
The Village Library and Community Development Department maintains a complete section that has information
covering all areas of flood protection, building construction and flood insurance. Flood zone maps are available
for inspection also. If you need to know what flood zone your homes is in or obtain a copy of an elevation
certificate (if on file), please call the Community Development Department, Village Planner at 882-1156, email:
jnentwick@village-npb.org or go to www.floodsmart.gov.
What should I know when preparing my house for hurricane season?
The Village Council passed an Ordinance in 2009 which includes an amendment to section 14-31, limiting the
amount of yard waste the Village will remove from a residential property on any scheduled yard waste collection
day.
Branches, tree limbs, shrub clippings, and palm fronds shall be
limited to one pile not exceeding 8 cubic yards, measuring
approximately 4 feet wide by 15 feet long by 4 feet tall.
If yard waste placed for collection exceeds the allowable limit,
property owners shall be required to pay the costs associated with
removal.
Remember, any person, group of persons, corporation, or other
entity paid a fee to perform tree trimming or landscape maintenance
shall be required to remove all yard waste generated by such
activities.
To learn more about the Village Code of Ordinances please visit
www.village-npb.org or call 691-3440.
No property owner shall generate yard waste for collection once any portion of the village has been
placed under a hurricane or tropical storm watch or warning by the national oceanic and atmospheric
association (NOAA).

When Harry Kelsey went bankrupt, he sold the Winter
Club to Sir Harry Oakes, a philanthropist and gold
miner. On July 8, 1943, Oakes was mysteriously
murdered in the Bahamas. Children were under the mistaken belief
that Oakes had been killed in the Winter Club, and that it had happened in the old
tower. For more information on the Winter Club, and the fascinating stories
surrounding it, visit the Village Historian, Rosa Godshall-Holden, at the
North Palm Beach Library or call 841-3371.

H urry, a few Summer Memberships are Still Available! The long summer days are here and
most golfers have a little more time to play or practice. The next time you head to the course
try some on course practice instead of your usual routine. The longer summer days make
this practice strategy possible and late in the day is when you should try it. Experiment with the
following games and you will see your scores drop:
1. Play a two ball scramble choosing the best shot. You will hit two balls off of the tee and then choose the best
drive. Now hit two balls from this better position. You will continue playing two balls and choosing the better
one until the ball is holed.
2. Play a two ball scramble choosing the worst shot. Same as above but you pick the
worst of your two shots each time.
3. Take your woods out of your bag and see how low you can shoot.
4. Play from the forward tees. If you usually play from the forward tees try playing
from our family tee markers. This practice technique will allow you to hit shorter shots
to the greens and should put you in position to become comfortable shooting lower
scores.
5. Long game only. In this game you will pick your ball up once you get within 30 yards of the
green and add 3 strokes to your score. If you shoot a lower score in this game than you
usually do, this means that you can be more efficient with your short game.
Remember, on course practice will help you bring your driving range game to the course! Good
luck and we look forward to seeing you soon.
