VILLAGE OF NORTH PALM BEACH
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS, in the United States as many as 30 million Americans are currently battling eating
disorders, and more than 600,000 individuals in the State of Florida suffer daily with their eating
disorder; and
WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious physical health consequences, including
irregular heartbeats, heart disease and heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis, gastric rupture, tooth
decay, obesity, gall bladder disease, diabetes, and death; and
WHEREAS, anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness; and
WHEREAS, eating disorders know no boundaries with respect to gender, race, age, or economic
status; and
WHEREAS, the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, a 501(c)(3) non - profit organization, is the
premier eating disorders organization in Palm Beach County dedicated to providing programs and
activities aimed at outreach and education related to health promotion, including all eating disorders,
positive body image, and self - esteem; and
WHEREAS, the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness has offered presentations on eating
disorders, positive body image, and self - esteem to over 170,000 individuals throughout Palm Beach
County and nationwide; and
WHEREAS, recovery from these disorders is possible, and individuals should not have to suffer or
recover alone.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, David B. Norris, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the
Village of North Palm Beach, do hereby proclaim February 24, 2013 — March 2, 2013 as:
