07-2011 NewsletterJULY 2011JULY 2011
Since 2007, Southern Self Storage, 401 Northlake
Blvd. has donated storage space at no charge to
NPB Support Our Troops Program (SOT), giving us
a place to store donated items until volunteers pack
them for shipment to our military personnel. In
March, Southern Self Storage managers, Larry and
Mary Camerlengo, organized a yard sale to benefit
Support Our Troops. Larry and Mary did the
advertising, solicited donations, provided the space,
set up the event and cleaned up afterward; raising
over $1600 in one day, with all proceeds going to
SOT to help offset our shipping costs. Larry helps
load up donations from storage and delivers them in
his truck to our facility on packing day, when
volunteers assemble care packages for our adopted
soldiers.

In 1955, Herbert and Richard Ross purchased the land
that would become the Village of North Palm
Beach. The Rosses already had a reputation in Florida,
and they could see why other developers were
failing. Proper land-planning was essential. Before
any lots went up for sale, it was ensured that the
Village had a good water supply and a sewage disposal plant. The population in June
of 1957 was 80 adults and 31 kids—111 happy residents!

STORM WATER AND ME
How can I help?
By knowing the facts and being aware, you can help clean up our canals and waterways.
Always remember, “nothing but storm water” belongs in the storm drains.
Lawn Care (Residents and Lawn Maintenance Companies):
• Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. When using these products, follow label directions.
• Use organic mulch and environmentally safe pest control methods whenever possible.
• Compost dead leaves, grass clippings or mulch yard waste. Don’t blow yard clippings into the street
or into storm drains!
House Care and Maintenance:
• Purchase biodegradable, non-toxic products.
• Use, store and dispose of products as directed on the container.
• Sweep up and properly dispose of any construction debris.
Pet Care:
• Always pick up after your pet…even in your own yard!
Be a Good Neighbor:
• Be on the lookout for anything being dumped into storm drains. Some common illegal discharges to storm
drains include: antifreeze, construction debris, plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, detergents, disinfec-
tants, dirt, gravel, fertilizers, insecticides, grease, oil filter, paint, pesticides, pet waste, solvents, trash, etc.
Call and report any illicit discharge to:
Village of North Palm Beach Code Compliance at: 561-841-3367, After hours: 561-848-2525 (Public Safety)
Our National Night Out Against Crime event will be held on Tuesday,
August 2, 2011 from 6-9 pm at Anchorage Park. Your North Palm Beach
Police Officers will be there not to write tickets, but to hand out hotdogs and prizes
to celebrate our neighbors uniting to fight back against crime.
This event is a great way for residents to get to know each other and for children
to have fun. Bring the whole family and enjoy music, Police/Fire/Rescue
demonstrations, food, FREE child fingerprinting and a kids' fun area with bounce
houses, and more! The North Palm Beach Department of Public Safety will have
Police and Fire/Rescue personnel as well as McGruff the
crime dog in attendance. National Night Out is designed to heighten
crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in local
anti-crime efforts; and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations.
Join us at Anchorage Park to send a message to criminals letting them know that the
neighborhoods in North Palm Beach are organized and fighting back! If you have
any questions about NNO contact Sgt. Dallesandro at 841-3300.
YOUR INVITED TO A PARTY
DON’T BE SURPRISED IF THE COPS SHOW UP!
Nationally, every Independence Day hundreds of people are injured and thousands of dollars of
property is lost due to fireworks being mishandled. Don’t become a statistic; enjoy fireworks by
watching one of the professionally produced shows such as the Village’s display at the North
Palm Beach Country Club. If you still insist on personal fireworks, remember if it makes a noise
or fires a projectile it is probably illegal for amateur use. Have a happy and SAFE Fourth!

GOLF TIP
When playing with amateur golfers there is one thing that they have in common when hitting their
approach to the green. They almost always come up short! I know there was that one time when you hit
your 8 iron 160 yards (probably down hill, down wind and on a firm course) but this is not your average 8
iron. When approaching the green our goal should be to finish pin high (even with the hole.) There are a
few things we can do to make this a more regular occurrence.
1. During your next round, keep track of where your approach shots finish in relation to the hole. Mark
an “S” for short, “P” for pin high, and “L” for long. If you are coming up short on the majority of your
approach shots proceed to step 2. If your approaches are evenly balanced skip to step 3.
2. So now we know that you are leaving most of your approach shots short of the hole. On your
next round hit one extra club than you normally would. Keep track of where your approaches
are finishing with your one additional club. If you still have the majority of your
approaches ending up short of the hole, try taking two extra clubs on your
next round and repeat the above exercise.
3. When you get to the point that your approaches are evenly balanced
between short and long of the hole, make a mental note (or even write
down) the yardages that each of your clubs travel. These will be your new
and correct yardages for each club.
You are only a few rounds away from knowing your actual distances and in turn lowering
your scores. All that you need is the correct information and you will start putting the ball
pin high. Good luck and remember, just hit more club.
Best wishes,
Lee Stroever, Head Golf Professional
