Village Clerk—Pg. 3 Public Safety Pg. 4—Public Safety Follow the Village of NPB on NIXLE.COM FIRE FACTS Fact: Fire does not care who you are, how much money you make, what kind of car you drive or how much "stuff" you have in your house. Fire does not care if you are rich or poor, single or married. Here are some more facts: • An estimated 54,500 heating fires occur each year in the United States. • Heating is the second leading cause of all residential building fires following cooking. • Residential building heating fires peak in January and February; this peak accounts for 34 percent of fires. • Confined heating fires, those fires confined to chimneys, fuels, fuel boxes, or boilers, account for 87 percent of residential build- ing heating fires. • Thirty-one percent of the non confined residential building heating fires occur because the heat source is too close to combustibles. • Residential building heating fires peak in the early evening hours between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm with the highest peak between 6:00pm and 8:00 pm. This 4-hour period accounts for 30 percent of all residential building heating fires. • The percent of residential building heating fires declines to the lowest point during the summer months from June to August. Heating fires during these months tend to be confined fuel burner/boiler malfunction fires (64 percent) or involve water heaters (10 percent). ADOPT-A-FAMILY THANK YOU! The North Palm Beach Department of Public Safety would like to thank all individuals, groups and businesses who participated in this year’s Adopt-A-Family program. Several North Palm Beach families needed a little extra help this past holiday season and the community stepped up! 8 local families had a brighter holiday due to the support of our community; of which took time during the very busy holiday season to think of those less fortunate families they will never meet. We have a small, very hard working group of staff who organize and run the entire program, but the support of all the Adopt a Family donors is what makes the program possible. WHAT IS THE BEST CRIME FIGHTING TOOL EVER INVENTED? The answer is simple...a good neighbor. Fortunately, good neighbors are found everywhere. They live in houses, condominiums, and apartment buildings alike. A neighborhood where people are alert to the potential of crime and willing to lookout for one another’s interests is a neighborhood where crimes are least likely to occur. Neighborhood Watch programs are proven the most effective means available for keeping crime out of neighborhoods. The North Palm Beach Police Department’s Neighborhood Watch Program unites law enforcement with local organizations and individual residents in a community-wide effort to reduce residential crime. Neighbors working together with the Police Department to prevent crime before it happens are the key to a successful program. One of the great things about playing with members and guests is watching how they play the game. Not necessarily their golf swings, but how they go about making decisions on the golf course. Course Management is a quick way to lower your scores without changing anything in your golf swing! As professionals, we see a lot of players taking unnecessary risks and hitting good shots that end up in bad places. While it will seem simple, one of my first rules of thumb is, “never let a straight shot hurt you.” Countless times I’ve watched players hit straight shots out over our ponds and watch the ball splash to its new watery home only to say, “I thought the wind would blow that back” or say they were trying to hook or slice the ball back onto the green or fairway. Aim your shot so that if you hit the ball straight, it won’t end up in a bad place. Another course management tip is knowing where to “lay up.” While I understand that we do not always hit the ball where we want, we can at least try to hit it to the right place. It is not always best to hit the ball as far as possible. Make an effort to lay up to a yardage and angle to the hole with which you are comfortable. Try to avoid having an awkward distance or tough shot over a deep bunker after hitting a good shot. Remember to choose the club and direction that will make your next shot the easiest and you might eliminate some of those big numbers that can wreck a good round. If you have any questions on course management or any other part of your golf game, stop by the Golf Shop and ask any of your golf professionals!
