FIRE RESCUE
A friendly word of advice – slow down and have a drink of water. With this summer’s heat and
accompanying humidity it’s unhealthy to run around in the heat of the day and let yourself get
dehydrated. Heat emergencies can affect people of all ages and physical conditions but are
especially prevalent among the very young and very old. To help prevent heat emergencies stay indoors
during the heat of the day and if you must be outside wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, stay in shade
where a breeze is present, and drink plenty of water. If you start to feel light-headed, your skin becomes dry
and warm to the touch or your muscles begin to cramp, call for help immediately. Symptoms of heat
emergencies can escalate rapidly and quickly become life threatening. Florida is a great place to enjoy
summer fun outdoors as long as you follow the guidelines and don’t over do it.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
On Tuesday, August 3rd, neighborhoods throughout North Palm Beach will
join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the annual National
Night Out Against Crime Event. The North Palm Beach Department of Public Safety
would like to encourage all residents to attend this celebration at its new location in
Anchorage Park on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
This event is a great way for residents to get to know each other and for children
to have fun. Bring the whole family and enjoy music, Police and Fire/Rescue
demonstrations, food, free child fingerprinting, a kids' fun area with bounce houses, and
more! The North Palm Beach Department of Public Safety will have Police and Fire/
Rescue personnel as well as McGruff the crime dog in attendance. National Night Out is
designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and
participation in local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police
community relations.
Join us this year at Anchorage Park to send a message to criminals letting them know that
the neighborhoods in North Palm Beach are organized and fighting back! If you have any
questions about NNO contact Sgt. Dallesandro at 841-3300.

What are the “Friends of the Library”?
Since its inception in 1978, the Friends group has grown to an estimated 1,700 members across the country
and has earned national recognition as one of the most active library-support organizations in the United
States. Friends members support the library by raising funds to develop and expand its facilities and services
to the community.
As a Friends member, you'll receive admittance to a Friends-only night at the annual book sale and you'll
have the satisfaction of knowing you're making a real contribution to your library system. Annual membership
rates: individual membership is $10; Family Membership $15; Sponsor $25; Patron $50. Applications are
available at the library’s circulation desk.
Donate Your Books, DVD’s & CD’s
The annual book sale is in January but it is never too early to clean off your bookshelves and bring your
books, DVD’s and CD’s to the library. If you are unable to bring them in, call the library and leave a message
for “The Friends.” We will arrange a time that is convenient for you and a volunteer will pick up your

Practicing with Purpose
I often find golfers that are trying to improve their golf game by spending a
lot of time practicing. But they are not improving and they are frustrated
because they feel that they are putting in the necessary hours to get better
but not seeing results. My favorite was a high school golfer that would
spend his summer days on the driving range, from sun up to sun down
“practicing” and his scores were actually getting worse. I asked him a very
simple question, “What are you working on when you practice?” He replied
that he was just “hitting balls.” He had no direction, no goals and nothing in
particular that he was working on while he beat balls until he was
exhausted. As I explained to him, I get more out of a 15-minute practice
session than he did in a week’s worth of work. Why? Because of the two
requirements of a good practice session: Intention & Attention. When we
want to improve we need a game plan of what we are working on while
practicing. Maybe it is a grip change, improved set-up or better club-path.
Whatever your golf swing deficiency is, that is what your practice session is
focused on and that is your intention. The second part is staying focused or
paying attention during every swing, every drill and during every moment of
the practice session. This intention of what you are doing and attention to
actually concentrating on it for the entire session will turn even a short time
practicing into a productive time for your golf swing. Next time you’re trying
to improve, make sure you know your intention and pay attention to what
you are doing and you will get the most out of your practice. If you are not
sure what to work on, you can always talk to one of your professionals,
we’re here to help!
Happy practicing,
Dave
