A MESSAGE FROM THE VILLAGE MANAGER Dear Village Residents, Get ready; the 2010 Census is coming soon! And this time, it’s only 10 questions that can be completed in 10 minutte – the shortest Census questionnaire in Census history. The 2010 Census is the biggest market-research project of the decade. The year’s questions ask for the number of people residing in the household, homeownership, ages, and dates of birth, if of Spanish origin, race, and dual household information. There are no questions regarding citizennshi or immigration status. The question part of the Census will arrive via mail around April 1, 2010. You may also get a knock on your door around that time from someone asking you the list of 10 questions. The questions will never be about banking or credit card information and they certainly will not ask for your social security number. Census workers are easy to identify. They will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. We strongly advise you to ask for identification and to see their badge before answering questions. Also note that you will not receive any type of Census communications through e-mail. Each question helps to determine how more then $400 billion will be allocated to communities across the country. It has been confirmed that Florida lost significant federal funding from 2000 – 2010 because our State’s population was significantly undercounted in the 2000 Census. Just one person not counted means less funding for programs such as Head Start, Title I grants, public transportation, road rehabilitation and construction, programs for the elderly, emergency food and shelter, and empowerment zones. There are other reasons why the Census is important. They include helping the private sector determine where jobs and job programs are needed, helping corporations determine locations for commercial enterprises (i.e. food stores, pharmacies and other essential services), and helping determine how many seats we have in the House of Representaatives Remember that this is a confidential process and your participation can help improve economic opportunities and living conditions here in the Village of North Palm Beach. An accurate Census of everyone living in the Village ensuure that money you pay in taxes will come back to you in important services such as education, police and fire protecttion housing and neighborhood improvements. This count will set funding levels for the next ten years, so please participate. Don’t be the next auto burglary victim that we come into contact with. To maintain your vehicle’s securrity take the following precautionary measures: • Don't leave valuables in your car. That sounds like "common sense", but drivers/passengers do leave leave items of value in plain view every day. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automaticaall a target. • If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place items out of sight before reaching your destination or move them inconspicuously. This includes packages, backpacks, gym bags, GPS units, MP3 players, etc. Someone may be watching when you put items under a seat or throw something over them. An opportunistic thief is on the lookout for trunk-packing, and can break into your car the minute you're out of sight. • Leave no trace. Don't leave any "sign" that there might be valuables "out of sight" in your vehiccle such as docking stations or connector cables. Leave nothing in "plain sight" that might make your vehicle worth "investigating" by a thief. • Try to park in busy, well-lighted areas. Try to park in well-traveled areas. Large anonymous lots are hit by thieves much more often than parking immediately adjacent to residential housing or other occupied buildings. Try to choose a well-lit, visible, parking spot where there is heavy vehicular/pedestrian movement. Auto-burglars preffe breaking into cars where they will not observed or attract notice, and choose their targets accordingly. • Lock ALL your vehicle's doors even if you plan to be gone for only a brief time. Every year, we have items stolen from unlocked vehicles where the owner was only going to be gone "just for a second". It only takes seconds to steal your stuff! It's not at all uncommon for thieves to walk down a row of parked vehicles and check vehicle doors to see if they are unlocked. • Set any alarm or anti-theft device. If you have one, use it! Many people believe that car-alarms no longer make a difference, but they can be an effective deterrent to an auto-burglar, who most often chooses the easiest target. From the Tennis Shop Country Club—Pg. 9 NPB Country Club From the Golf Shop Tips from the links… Often when golfers play short game shots from around a green, they hit shots that are either too high or too low for the given circumstance. Some golfers love trying to pitch the ball high and soft, while others try to run the ball along the ground from anywhere they can. The optimum shot to play is usually somewhere in between. Try this little trick and see if you can learn the proper shot to play. When hitting a chip, pitch or even bunker shot onto the green, imagine that you were allowed to toss the ball underhand onto the green and let it roll to the hole. Think about these items: 1. How high would I toss the ball? (see its arc in the air) 2. Where would I land the ball on the green? (see the exact spot) 3. How would it roll to the hole from where it landed? (see the break and roll) After you have that mental image of the proper flight of your shot, choose the appropriately lofted club to hit your shot with the correct trajectory and distance you have just imagined. Hit your shot and see if you can make the ball fly on that imagined ball flight landing on the spot you have chosen. On the practice green, you can even try actually tossing a few balls onto the green to see if you are correctly imagining the right shot. Give this underhand, tossing the ball imagery a try and see if you can hit your short game shots closer than ever!
