04-2008 Newsletter PDFDear Residents, April is upon us -this is the time of year that we associate with warmer weather, increased afternoon showers and outdoor activities. It also signifies that we here in
the Village are better than halfway through our fiscal (budget) year. We know that we have numerous financial challenges ahead of us due in part to the rising costs associated with personnel,
benefits and service related operating expenses but we are committed to meeting those ever changing challenges facing municipal government. The recently passed legislative mandate “Amendment
1” will most assuredly exacerbate an already lean economic forecast. We will begin shortly with our “formal” budgetary workshops for next year, but in reality we never stop working towards
our mandate to “improve service delivery while reducing costs”. April has yet another meaning for me and one that is personal; it is my 1 year anniversary as your Village Manager. In
many respects it seems like yesterday that I moved from across the street as your Pu?blic Safety Director to serve as the Village Manager and the transition has been both eye-opening
and extremely rewarding. As I reflect back upon this past year it occurs to me that we have been faced with a number of issues, some good and some not so. It is with a great deal of
pride that I can say that we have met those issues head-on and accomplished so much over the past twelve months. I say “we” as I nor my staff could have achieved the success that we
have without those partnerships that have been forged with you the residents. It is truly a collective effort. As I indicated to all upon my appointment, my goal is to establish and
maintain a respected and trusted public service organization through equity, transparency, honor, integrity, commitment, and stewardship. I pray, that in the eyes of you the residents,
that I have been successful in realizing that goal. I look forward to serving together with you to ensure that the Village remains “The best place to live under the sun”. “Open government
extends beyond that of a political statement; it is the standard for excellence in democratic local governance.” Best regards, Jimmy Knight, Village Manager BRAND NEW STYLE! What do

provides one soldier 80 minutte of telephone time from either Iraq or Afghanistan. Once your donation is received, we work with the Military Exchange to purchase cards that are guaranteed
to work in our soldier's deployment area. Our volunteers worked hard to collect enough donations to send 41 calling cards to a reserve unit from Palm Beach County, the 535th Military
Police Unit, currently stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. Our goal is to collect enough money to purchase 210 of these special calling cards by June 1, 2008. Share in giving our soldiers a

it down the middle! Mike Interested in improving your game? Call the GOLF SHOP at 561-691-3433! Approximately 60% of our score will come from our short game, yet this is the area we
we tend to practice the least. Isn’t that interesting! The part of the game where we can improve our score the most and potentially the quickest we give the smallest amount of attention.
Any practice in the area of putting, chipping and pitching should produce better results! Our greens certainly a deft touch in order to navigate them effectively, learning to control
our trajectory will be a valuable asset. When pitching our ball, understanding how different ball positions affect the ball and its flight are important. When you have a back pin with
a lot of green to cover we need more roll, in this situation play the ball past center in your stance opposite the inside of your back foot, this should give you a low penetrating flight
with a much needed roll. Our normal everyday pitch with medium trajectory, the ball should be positioned in the center of our stance, the ball will not roll out like the previous shot.
On these two shots keep your weight on your front foot and leave it there. The last ball position is opposite the inside of your front foot, this will produce a higher ball-flight and
a softer landing with not much roll. This shot is effective for front pin locations and shots over bunkers. When playing this shot keep your weight neutral at address. Play around with
your ball position, you might find a shot that can help you get up and down more often. Appointees will serve for a period of 1 -3 years, depending upon the Board. Deadline for applications
is Friday, 4/11/08. All applicants will be contacted for an interview with the Village Council.

feet are not in the proper position. This can be prevented by pretending to stop at a "red light" when the opposing player is hitting their shot to you at the net. This will give you
enough time to "split step" and set up for any type of volley or overhead which you may have to hit. Will be April 7 – 11 at the Community Center. The cost is $150/child. Camp hours

THIEVES TARGET! The other day I was pumping gas into my private vehicle when I noticed a man nearby who had left his wallet on the roof of his vehicle. He was busy washing his windshield
and pumping gas and didn’t seem to realize that his wallet was an easy target. What surprised me most was when I mentioned to him to not forget his wallet, he continued on with what
he was doing, seemingly not to care. Too often your Police Department gets calls of thefts that occur in your local gas stations. What we have noticed is that many times customers leave
their car doors unlocked and their valuables exposed. This enables a thief to open an unlocked door and grab any valuables within reach. It’s a crime of opportunity that takes only a
few seconds to commit. You can keep from becoming a victim of gas station theft by following these tips: ? Pay attention to your surroundings. ? Pick gas stations that are well-lighted
and have video surveillance cameras at the pump. ? Always remove your keys, close the windows, and lock the doors while you are pumping gas. ? Keep valuables out of plain view and lock
the doors even if you are going inside for just a moment. ? Don’t let your cell phone distract you. If you take the time to practice these tips, it will help keep you SAFE and prevent
your vehicle from becoming a ... T h e V i l l a g e N E W S L E T T E R A P R I L 2 0 0 8 Avoiding “Pain at the Pumps”! Draw your own floor plan on a piece of paper, marking two ways
out of every room which may include your windows. Every member of your household should be part of the planning and a meeting place outside must be established. Tell everyone to meet
at this location after they’ve escaped so you can count heads and tell the Fire Department if anyone’s trapped inside. Plans are great, but you must also practice them by holding a home
fire drill. Getting out of your own Home sounds easy, but your home can look very different when it’s dark and full of smoke. Children in particular need to practice what to do. Have
someone press the the button on the smoke alarm as the signal for the drill to start. Remember that a fire drill is not a race. Get out quickly, but carefully. Everyone should go to
the meeting place. Make time to plan and practice your family’s . . . Great Escape Today! EVERY FAMILY MUST HAVE AN ESCAPE PLAN! WHEN people were asked in a recent national survey, how
long they felt they had to escape from a home fire, their answer surprised us. 58% said two minutes or more and 24% estimated they had more than 10 minutes to escape. The truth is you
may have much less time than you think! A typical living room fire can threaten the entire house in just a few minutes, producing life-threatening conditions within your bedrooms in
less than two minutes after the smoke alarm sounds. Your family needs to know how to get out at the first sign of a fire. Your Police Department will be offering a special class for
the women of North Palm Beach on Saturday, May 3rd from 9:00 a.m. till noon at the Public Safety Department, 560 US Highway 1. This is a class that will specifically deal with ideas
and methods on how to stay safe while at home or out in public. We will offer suggestions and demonstrations on personal protection devices and will even have a self defense instructor
on hand that will teach defensive techniques. For more information on this great opportunity or to sign up for this free class, please contact Officer Angela Williams at 841-3300. P
