THE NUMBERS are staggering: 335

remains one of die scare's most successful public - access courses. Then
there Rqs Old Works (see Page 96), the much-acclaimed, Top -100
design in Anaconda, Monr., that was once an abandoned copper -
smelting plane Now, there is North Palm Beach Country Club.
Originally designed in 1926 by Seth Raynor, North Palm Beach
underwent an extensive redesign by Jack Nicklaus that included new
irrigation, total re- grassing of all playing surfaces, new green con -
struccion, and improved fairway surface drainage. drainage. It now bears the lofty
uatus of a Nicklms Signature, Golf Coarse, minus any lofty price tug.
Try S 1. "It was at labor of love;' said Nicklaus, who dernured his design
services to the place he has culled home for over 40 years. "I kit the
property deserved it strong golf course from the back tees, a very user -

With an immediate increase in member-

Jack's North Palm Beach Country Club
Located just. five mites from PGA National Reson, the
recently redesigned North Palm Beach Country Club
(Rating: B +), now a Jack Nicklaus creation, seems like a
world apart. For starters, it is a South Florida feel -good story.
The Golden Bear fashioned this signature course for his home
county free of charge as a labor of love for the community
and the game. He transformed an overplayed, poorly
conditioned, cow pasture -like layout into an aesthetically
appealing municipal jewel. The rolling, even hilly terrain —
the product not only of prodigious earth moving, but also
of a rare natural geologic feature known as the Seminole
Ridge — immediately spikes our interest. Also, although a
neighborhood looms immediately around the course. neither
houses nor streets go through it. Likewise, golfers are spared
the monotony of hole after hole of lake- and lagoon -lined
fairways so common in this part of the world. While them '%
no shortage of water hazards here, they take many forms
and don't define the game. Arguably, the two most stunning
holes, the sand -laden par -three 5th and the rolling par -four
6th, both proceed alongside the bluff of the more majestic
Intracoastal Waterway.
North Palm Beach Country Club provides a links -style
game with an expansive feel. While tall trees can pose
problems, most notably on the dogleg left par -four 4th, most
holes are exposed; wind factors strongly into strategy and
club selection. Many tee shots present inviting downhill
prospects to wonderfully wide fairways, enabling golfers to
grip it and rip it. Be advised, however, that this is a long,
tough course. From the five sets of tees, the par 71 routing
now stretches from 5,203 yards to 7,071 yards, nearly 900
yards longer than before. The rough can throttle a club, and
the undulating greens induce many three -putts. During our
visit, the course was in splendid shape but for sevend bunkers
that needed raking.
Non - resident golfers may reserve tee times up to five days
in advance. The green fee has increased significantly since
the Nicklaus redesign, but this course is still a. bargain. If you
can put up with the heavy municipal crowtis, Palm Beach
Country Club is highly recommended and more intriguing
than four of the five layouts at PGA National Resort.

THE OJAI VALLEY INN & SPA
BACK IN FULL BLOOM
Nestled in an enchanting mountain canyon about 45 minutes
from Sunta Barbara, two hours from LAX, and 15 miles from the
ocean, the venerable Ojai Valley Inn & Spa has been revitalized
by its recent and quite marvelous $86- million, head -to -toe
refurbishment. If you're looking for a secluded and charming
weekend golf getaway, there's no more storied and romantic
retreat than the Inn. While the glorious Ojai Valley has long
been a Sedona -like magnet for spiritualists and hippies, the Inn
counts Hollywood royalty (it even provided the setting for such
classic movies as Pat and Mike and Frank Capra's Lost Horizon)
among its patrons. Despite its glitzy history, the Inn is above all
comfortable, friendly, and unpretentious. Couples, families, and
anyone who wants to combine golf with spa activities will find the
Ojai Valley Inn one of the best options in the US.
The genesis of the Ojai Valley Inn can be traced to 1923•
when Ohio glass magnate Edward D. Libbey established the
Ojai Valley Country Club. He summoned renowned architect
Wallace Neff to build a Spanish Colonial -style clubhouse and
George C. Thomus. Jr. to carve a golf course from the surrounding
meadows, ravines, and rolling oak- dotted hillsides which reminded
Libbey of Tuscany. The deep - thinking Thomas, author of Golf
Architecture in America, was an inspired choice. In addition to his
course architecture (for which he never charged a commission),
Thomas made his mark as a World War I aviator (surviving three
crashes), a rose grower who hybridized the most popularAmerican
rose (Dr: Huey) along with more than 40 other rootstocks, it
champion dog breeder who took a top prize at the Westminster
Kennel Club in 1903, and asleep -sea fisherman. After assisting
on legendary layouts in the Philadelphia area (including Pine
Valley, where he was a lifelong member), he moved to California
and designed such notable copses as Bel -Air Country Club and
Riviera.
At Ojai, Thomas worked in conjunction with William P. Bell.
The first ball was struck in 1925, and the course was subsequently
updated by Jay Moorish in 1988. Though the routing nneasuresjust
6,292 yards from the tips, its deceptive length, sculpted bunkers,
pronounced elevation changes, and holes inspired by Pine Valley
present sufficient challenge for any player. Ever since 1999, when
two stunning holes, lost since the mid -1940s when the grounds
were converted into an Army training ground and then a Navy
R &R facility, were restored by Carter Moorish (Jay's son), the
course has never been better.
THE GOLF
From its inception, the Ojai Valley Inn Golf Course
(Rating: A -) was to be a highly playable, championship -worthy
layout. Eighty -five years, seven Champions Tour tournaments, and
numerous made- for - television events later, Thomas's creation can
be declared it success.
The course is actually a tale of two nines —one superb, one
unremarkable, save for the propitious restoration ol'tile two lost

This Nicklaus design sits in Northern Palm Beach and offers play- 14
ers an affordable summer rate for a semi - private course. Standing
on the tee box at this par 4 you are at the epicenter of the perfectly
manicured fairways and greens of the back nine, which are all visible. The
course is rated as 2008's 10th "Best Course You Can Play" in Florida by
GolfWeek. The scorecard shows this hole as the sixth - toughest on the
par -72 layout; however, it has a local "reputation" as being the toughest.
